In Loving Memory Of Clare Lyons

"Mamo"

September 26, 1916 - July 1, 2008

For those of you who read my blog, you know that my grandmother passed away in July. I wrote about it here. What you may not know is that for the past 12 years of her life, she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

After she was first diagnosed, she moved into my parent’s house where I was living with my daughter. I saw first-hand how devastating this disease can be. I saw my grandmother go from a completely independent and meticulous women to a completely dependent person who lost all of the wonderful memories her life created.

In many ways, my family has been saying goodbye to my grandmother for years...as her energy diminished, her weight plummeted and the memories of her life were erased from her mind.

I had just finished drawing the images for this set when I received a call from my mother telling me that my grandmother passed away. Although part of me was rejoicing because she suffered too long…the selfish part of me was wishing for just one more visit...

After returning from Pennsylvania and getting back to work—I had a resurgence of energy for this new set. I decided the best way for me to honor my Grandmother’s memory was to give back. And so, 100% of my proceeds from this set will be sent to the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Always.

I am so proud that, with Gina’s help, I am able to do this. So thank YOU, Gina, for helping me to find a creative way to give back.
(To read a bit more about Alzheimer's disease, see below.)

So, here is one of the cards I created with my new set called Whimsical Autumn, which will be available after the release party (7-10 p.m. CENTRAL) on Friday, September 5 at Gina K Designs. The squirrel (which was a last minute addition to the set and drawn by Gina K!), the apple, the basket of apples, the leaf (background) are all part of the set. The pumpkins used on this card are from Rupa's new set called So Grateful ....I thought, together, these images would make an adorable fall scene. So I created this tag card:

I water colored the scene with re-inkers and added the pumpkins on dimensionals. I stamped the leaf stamp on the caramel cardstock in the background. The opening tab was created with the Large Flourish punch that Gina now carries at her store. I also used the corner punch to help frame the scene.

I added a bit of faux sewing, raffia and a button...and the scene was complete.

Here is the view from the top of the card so you can see that that tab on the side is for decorative purposes only! The card opens like a normal card!

Here is a close up of the colored image:

Materials used: Stamps-Whimsical Autumn (Carolyn King for Gina K Designs), So Grateful (Rupa Shevde for Gina K Designs); Brilliance black ink; Stampin' Up reinkers-chocolate chip, close to cocoa, so saffron, pumpkin pie, green galore, creamy caramel, more mustard, old olive; Ink-chocolate chip, old olive, bashful blue (Stampin Up!); sponge; cardstock-very vanilla, watercolor paper, creamy caramel, old olive, chocolate chip; Ek Success flourish punch; EK Success corner punch; circle punch (SU!); tag punch (SU!); large grommet (SU!); raffia (Hobby Lobby); sponge; paper piercing tool and mat pack (SU); slit punch (SU!); hemp (Hobby Lobby); button; glue dots; dimensionals (SU!).

******You can see more of the images in this set from the amazing designers on Gina's team by going to her blog!

Did You KNOW?

There are approximately five million Americans who are living with Alzheimer’s disease. This progressive, and fatal brain disease destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

The Alzheimer's Association is the largest not-for-profit organization for Alzheimer’s research, providing millions of dollars for funding research grants and helping to improve the lives of those who live with this disease and their caregivers. Although there is no current cure, there are treatments that, combined with support, can improve the quality of life for those living with this disease.

WANNA WIN THIS SET FREE!? Just post a comment on this blog entry and I will have Random.Cara pick a winner on Friday. I will announce the winner here and at the release party on Splitcoaststampers that evening. (Oh, and subscribers CAN post twice!)

Thanks SO MUCH for stopping by!

I am so sorry that you lost your grandmother. I'm also very sorry that she had Alzheimer's disease. My mothe-in-law passed away a year ago last month from the very same disease. I watched her go from being a very energetic, loving person to someone who became helpless and lose her ability to live life the way that she had for so many years. It was heart breaking. I loved her and I miss her very much. Thank you for being so generous in giving back. I hope that one day their will be a cure for this terrible disease.

Your card is lovely.

Looks like another cute set. I too watched a grandparent suffer this disease. what a wonderful tribute to her memory you are giving.

Jan Scholl said...

I knew a lady who suffered from this and her elderly hubby kept her home and took care of her to the end. I don't know how he did it. He would bring her to McDonalds every day for lunch. She rarely ate and would come to eat table to say hi (sometimes over and over) but I always patted her hand.

We had a good, sweet friend of the family that had Alzheimer's. It is so hard to watch. What a wonderful way to say you love her!

How wonderful you are! My best friend (my granddad) passed away from Alzheimer's many years ago. As I lived next door, I helped take care of him as he worsened, like he took care of me as a little girl. It was so hard losing him and his memories to this disease. I wish you happy thoughts of your grandmother, and many blessings that your set allows for a large donation to the foundation.
Best wishes!

Hi Cammie, thank you for sharing about your grandmother. I was only about 10 years old when my mother got Alzheimer's Disease, and she lived for about 32 years. My dad took wonderful care of her, until the last 5 years of her life when she had to go into a home. It's a heartbreaking disease which not only destroys the memories of the person suffering the disease, but also of the people around them. Your set is a wonderful tribute to your grandmother. Congratulatins.

What an awesome way to honor your grandmothers memory Cammie! You are so lucky to have been touched by such a wonderful lady it looks like and also be in a position to do this! My aunt has just recently been diagnosed with this disease, and I had been reading up on it and was just in tears thinking of what is to come. So on a personal level, I thank you too for contributing to this..

And as for the card, OMG, this is just an adorable scene! Love all the details you have added and your coloring is always so amazing!

What a touching story and a generous thing you are doing!! My grandmother suffered from Alzheimers as well - it's such a horrible thing to watch someone suffer from. I'll admit that I've never bought a stamp set from Gina K (I know!!) but this will be my first - I, like you, have done fundraisers for Alzheimers research and I so believe in what you are doing!!

This is such an adorable card ! Love that squirrel and can't wait to see what else is in the set!

My Mom has had Alzheimers for a very long time now, started out slowly and then progressed, it's been almost 15 years. She's never had the joy of truly knowing my children or other grandchildren. She's been robbed of her years that were supposed to be carefree and leisurely.

Nothing much worse than saying, Hi Mom and have her say back...who are you ?

It's truly a heartbreaking disease to watch someone go through life this way.

How proud your Grandmother will be of you! I just know she's smiling down on all of us!

My grandmother also had Alzheimer's. I was holding her hand when she passed. She had been in the nursing home for over 10 years, perfectly healthy but not knowing anything that went on around her. That is the saddest disease, and I pledged my support to Alzheimer's Association many years ago. Thank you, Carolyn.

My husband's grandfather, whom I was very close to, had dimentia which is an advanced form of alzheimer's and it was the most heartbreaking thing to see. To see a man who used to be so strong to be so weak and from total independence to dependence. We lost him two years ago and to think about him and what he went through still brings tears to my eyes. My heart goes out to you and your family but what a wonderful tribute to your grandmother.

What a beautiful way to honor your Grandmother. I, too, lost my Mother this past February to Alzheimers - I miss her everyday, but wouldn't wish her back to the life she had at the end.
Through all of this I have discovered that Blessings can be hard.
I will be ordering your beautiful set and I will think of my wonderful mother everytime I use as fall was her favorite season.

What a dreadful disease, my grandfather is going through it now and doesn't remember any of us kids and even doesn't recognize his own kids now. I am sorry for all who go through this and I applaud your honoring your grandmother! Hopefully there will be a treatment soon :)

How gracious a family to care for a family member afflicted with Alzheimers. It takes a lot of love and patience to care for Alzheimers patients. I know, I cared for both my mom and dad who were both afflicted with it at the same time. There were many hard times and I thought I was dying too...but I did my best and I have no regrets. I admire you for honoring your grandmother. MarilynY

Cammie - your new set is darling and the tribute to your grandma is wonderful. My grandmother had Alzheimer's the last 9-10 years of her life and it is devastating to family members. Unfortunately, my dear mother who turned 80 on Sept.1is beginning to show some signs of memory loss as well. We are praying she won't go down the same path as her mother. Blessings to you for your generosity in contributing to such a worthy cause.

Wow!!!! what a beautiful card.... I can relate to what Alzheimers does to a person.... I do not have any close relatives with the disease... but I work with it every day... I'm an RN/owner of an Assisted Living Home in Wisconsin and about 1/2 that is 15 out of my 30 residents have some form of dementia/Alzheimer's.... and it is truely difficult.... I can't imagine having a close relative with it.... but I guess we have to deal with what the good Lord gives us .... The set is wonderful and it is very generous of you to donate all of that back to Alzheimer's association... Hopefully someday there will be a cure maybe when our children are that old.... Again that is truely awsome of you to do this.... God Bless. Melissa

Cammie,
The tears are flowing down my cheeks right now from reading about your grandma, and thinking of a dear lady that I know who has Alzheimers. She was like a mother to my hubby when he was little and I love her like one too. It is such a heart breaking disease and I hate seeing her go through it. Sorry for sobbing....your set is beautiful and what a lovely thing for you to do!! {{HUGS}}

I love your new set, Cammie, and you're sure to sell a lot of them. What a loving and giving thing that you're doing with it. I can't think of a better way for you to honor your grandmother (and help others with Alzheimer's). I've had a couple relatives with it as well, and I know just what you and your family have been through with this devastating disease). I hope your sales are such that you can't keep up with the orders! ;)

Oh -- I almost forgot! Your tag card is so pretty! You did a beautiful job with the coloring, and the little ribbon on the barrel is so sweet. tfs

Carolyn,

I am so sorry for your loss. As you stated, you started to loss your grandmother long ago. Who she was the day she passed, wasn't the grandmother you once knew. Keep those wonderful old memories of her alive in your heart and with this collection and the proceeds going to help research Alzheimers that is wonderful of you to do that. Great that Gina assisted you in taking this step.

I am a caregivier/companion to the elderly. 99% of my clients have some type of dementia, whether it be Alzheimers, Parkinsons; etc. I have lost several of them over time. From working with AD clients for the past 5 years, I have learned alot firsthand about the disease.
It is a disease that you wouldn't want anyone to go through.

Knowing that the only true way, according to research, to know if someone 'truely' had Alzheimers is at their death to do an autopsy on their brain. It saddens me to know that reseach is so far behind in this area. This disease is such a mystery still. I pray one day the research will be so advanced that the cause will be known and a cure found for it. The money from your stamp sets will only help this research even more.

God bless you and your family during such a difficult time.

JOY

Carolyn, you are amazing. Truly. I have a similar story to yours. My grandpa too moved in with us when he had Alzheimers. He lived with us for over a year and the disease progressed so quickly that we finally had to move him into a full time care facility. It was so hard watching him deal with it and I think the worst part of it was the fact that he knew something was wrong with him. The wonderful thing about the whole situation is that right before he died he was himself one last time. I am in tears just remembering those few moments. He died on my birthday and I will never forget it.

This is such a blessing and I want you to know I am buying your set as soon as it is released. You don't need to enter me into your drawing because I will be buying it anyway. Thank you so much for what you are doing!

((hugs))

P.S. I also want you to know I received your package yesterday and I LOVED it! Thanks for that too!

I will be sure to buy this set if I don't win it and several other sets to give away as blog candy in memory of my grandparents.
