In Loving Memory Of Clare Lyons
"Mamo"
September 26, 1916 - July 1, 2008
For those of you who read my blog, you know that my grandmother passed away in July. I wrote about it here. What you may not know is that for the past 12 years of her life, she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
After she was first diagnosed, she moved into my parent’s house where I was living with my daughter. I saw first-hand how devastating this disease can be. I saw my grandmother go from a completely independent and meticulous women to a completely dependent person who lost all of the wonderful memories her life created.
In many ways, my family has been saying goodbye to my grandmother for years...as her energy diminished, her weight plummeted and the memories of her life were erased from her mind.
I had just finished drawing the images for this set when I received a call from my mother telling me that my grandmother passed away. Although part of me was rejoicing because she suffered too long…the selfish part of me was wishing for just one more visit...
After returning from Pennsylvania and getting back to work—I had a resurgence of energy for this new set. I decided the best way for me to honor my Grandmother’s memory was to give back. And so, 100% of my proceeds from this set will be sent to the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Always.
I am so proud that, with Gina’s help, I am able to do this. So thank YOU, Gina, for helping me to find a creative way to give back.
(To read a bit more about Alzheimer's disease, see below.)
So, here is one of the cards I created with my new set called Whimsical Autumn, which will be available after the release party (7-10 p.m. CENTRAL) on Friday, September 5 at Gina K Designs. The squirrel (which was a last minute addition to the set and drawn by Gina K!), the apple, the basket of apples, the leaf (background) are all part of the set. The pumpkins used on this card are from Rupa's new set called So Grateful ....I thought, together, these images would make an adorable fall scene. So I created this tag card:
I water colored the scene with re-inkers and added the pumpkins on dimensionals. I stamped the leaf stamp on the caramel cardstock in the background. The opening tab was created with the Large Flourish punch that Gina now carries at her store. I also used the corner punch to help frame the scene.
I added a bit of faux sewing, raffia and a button...and the scene was complete.
Here is the view from the top of the card so you can see that that tab on the side is for decorative purposes only! The card opens like a normal card!
Here is a close up of the colored image:
Materials used: Stamps-Whimsical Autumn (Carolyn King for Gina K Designs), So Grateful (Rupa Shevde for Gina K Designs); Brilliance black ink; Stampin' Up reinkers-chocolate chip, close to cocoa, so saffron, pumpkin pie, green galore, creamy caramel, more mustard, old olive; Ink-chocolate chip, old olive, bashful blue (Stampin Up!); sponge; cardstock-very vanilla, watercolor paper, creamy caramel, old olive, chocolate chip; Ek Success flourish punch; EK Success corner punch; circle punch (SU!); tag punch (SU!); large grommet (SU!); raffia (Hobby Lobby); sponge; paper piercing tool and mat pack (SU); slit punch (SU!); hemp (Hobby Lobby); button; glue dots; dimensionals (SU!).
******You can see more of the images in this set from the amazing designers on Gina's team by going to her blog!
Did You KNOW?
There are approximately five million Americans who are living with Alzheimer’s disease. This progressive, and fatal brain disease destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.
The Alzheimer's Association is the largest not-for-profit organization for Alzheimer’s research, providing millions of dollars for funding research grants and helping to improve the lives of those who live with this disease and their caregivers. Although there is no current cure, there are treatments that, combined with support, can improve the quality of life for those living with this disease.
WANNA WIN THIS SET FREE!? Just post a comment on this blog entry and I will have Random.Cara pick a winner on Friday. I will announce the winner here and at the release party on Splitcoaststampers that evening. (Oh, and subscribers CAN post twice!)
Thanks SO MUCH for stopping by!

That is such a beautiful card, and what you are doing with the proceeds is more than beautiful, it is indescribable. My Grandpa passed away a little over a year ago as a result from having Alzheimer's. You are an awesome person, thanks for doing this.
Hey, I get to post again because I subscribe! Woohoo!
Carolyn, I'm so sorry you lost your precious grandmother this summer. I'm in tears reading about her alzheimer's. What a wonderful way to honor her with proceeds from this set going to fight this horrible disease.
You are so generous to donate all the proceeds from sales of this set as well as offer it as a prize. I'm anxious to see the rest of the set.
The card is just beautiful ... love the neat "tag" feature, too!
I think it's amazingly generous of you to give your earnings on this set to such a worthy cause! Such a wonderful thing to do!
You rock, Cammie!

I am so sorry that you lost your grandmother. I'm also very sorry that she had Alzheimer's disease. My mothe-in-law passed away a year ago last month from the very same disease. I watched her go from being a very energetic, loving person to someone who became helpless and lose her ability to live life the way that she had for so many years. It was heart breaking. I loved her and I miss her very much. Thank you for being so generous in giving back. I hope that one day their will be a cure for this terrible disease.
Your card is lovely.

Looks like another cute set. I too watched a grandparent suffer this disease. what a wonderful tribute to her memory you are giving.
I knew a lady who suffered from this and her elderly hubby kept her home and took care of her to the end. I don't know how he did it. He would bring her to McDonalds every day for lunch. She rarely ate and would come to eat table to say hi (sometimes over and over) but I always patted her hand.
We had a good, sweet friend of the family that had Alzheimer's. It is so hard to watch. What a wonderful way to say you love her!

How wonderful you are! My best friend (my granddad) passed away from Alzheimer's many years ago. As I lived next door, I helped take care of him as he worsened, like he took care of me as a little girl. It was so hard losing him and his memories to this disease. I wish you happy thoughts of your grandmother, and many blessings that your set allows for a large donation to the foundation.
Best wishes!
What an amazing way to honour your grandmother! As a nurse, I am so excited to see the proceeds going to such a great cause.
Carolyn, The card is so cute! What a wonderful tribute to your grandmother. Thank you for all you do!
Hi Cammie, thank you for sharing about your grandmother. I was only about 10 years old when my mother got Alzheimer's Disease, and she lived for about 32 years. My dad took wonderful care of her, until the last 5 years of her life when she had to go into a home. It's a heartbreaking disease which not only destroys the memories of the person suffering the disease, but also of the people around them. Your set is a wonderful tribute to your grandmother. Congratulatins.

What an awesome way to honor your grandmothers memory Cammie! You are so lucky to have been touched by such a wonderful lady it looks like and also be in a position to do this! My aunt has just recently been diagnosed with this disease, and I had been reading up on it and was just in tears thinking of what is to come. So on a personal level, I thank you too for contributing to this..
And as for the card, OMG, this is just an adorable scene! Love all the details you have added and your coloring is always so amazing!
Wow - No, I didn't know that it was the sixth leading cause of death. Sadly I do know someone with the disease and I'm sorry for what your grandma went through. I'm sure she was a wonderful woman. Thanks for the beautiful images and your generosity.
What a gorgeous card! This is such a great way to honor your grandmother! Thanks for the opportunity to win this awesome stamp set.

What a wonderful way to honor your Grandmother. My Grandfather had Alzheimer's and passed away a few years ago. It was so sad to see his health decline along with his memories.
Your stamp set is beautiful and this is so touching to contribute all the money to the cause.
What a touching story and a generous thing you are doing!! My grandmother suffered from Alzheimers as well - it's such a horrible thing to watch someone suffer from. I'll admit that I've never bought a stamp set from Gina K (I know!!) but this will be my first - I, like you, have done fundraisers for Alzheimers research and I so believe in what you are doing!!
It's wonderful how you're choosing to honor your grandmother. My grandmother passed away almost a year ago from the same thing. Gina and all the designers are wonderful in my eyes because of all the causes that are donated to.
Your card is beautiful and I think donating the profits in honor of your grandmother is the perfect way to honor her memory.
Awww, Carolyn, your write-up about your grandmom made me cry. Very touching. It's great that you're honoring her with this VERY cute set, and how SUPER cool to give 100% to the Alzheimer's Association!

This is such an adorable card ! Love that squirrel and can't wait to see what else is in the set!
My Mom has had Alzheimers for a very long time now, started out slowly and then progressed, it's been almost 15 years. She's never had the joy of truly knowing my children or other grandchildren. She's been robbed of her years that were supposed to be carefree and leisurely.
Nothing much worse than saying, Hi Mom and have her say back...who are you ?
It's truly a heartbreaking disease to watch someone go through life this way.
How proud your Grandmother will be of you! I just know she's smiling down on all of us!
Besides the fact that I love this set I love even more the fact that you are using it to support Alzheimers research. I have personally seen the devastation that it leaves in it's path. Thank you!

Beautiful, Cammie!! I'm sure your grandma is smiling on you! My husband's grandma also suffered from alzheimers, so I know what you mean about watching them lose so much over time. This is a great thing you're doing -- big hugs to you and Gina! :)
What a wonderful way to honor your grandmother!!! I'm sure she is smiling down on you and is very proud!!!
I watched my mother fade away to this horrible disease. It's a terrible thing to see someone you love lose their memories. My mom lost all memorys of us, and never knew most of her grandkids. It's a hard thing to go through, for them and the family.
Thanks again for your generous donation to Alzheimers. Maybe someday soon they can find a cure for this thief!!!
What a wonderful card Carolyn! Such a fabulous tribute to your Grandmother and everyone whom is affected by this disease. I know how difficult it can be to watch a loved one suffer from the effects...broke my heart watching my Grandmother slowly go.
Can't wait to get this set!!!!
I, too, lost my grandmother far too early and she was a victim of Alzheimers. She was my role model. A very independent and kind woman. I still miss her. This is a wonderful way to honor her. I'm sorry for your loss.

Truly an honorable tribute to your beloved Mamo and a lovely tag card. Your artistry is deeply inspiring.
I am currently living with my Mother in her home as her caregiver due to this horrible disease. Although she is in the beginning stages with other physical illnesses as well, it is hard to watch the decline that is happening all too fast. Thanks for your donation to charity.

so sorry to hear about your grandmother. enjoy your memories of her.
Carolyn, thank you for your generosity. Unfortunately, I just had to put my father into an Alzheimers care unit. It has been such a difficult year for my mother, my dad and me and this was our last resort. Its a heartbreak as he was such a brillant and kind man of God and to see him being robbed of his memories and thought processing is tragic.
What an amazing tribute. The set is adorable and it's so generous of you to donate the proceeds!!! Fabulous Carolyn!
As a subscriber, I will add this second comment:
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

What a wonderful way to honor your grandmother. I love that you said that 100% of your proceeds will ALWAYS go to the association. Your set looks wonderful!
Carolyn, Thank you for such a wonderful set going to a great cause. I can only imagine how proud your grandmother is of you. I know first hand what your family went thru as I lost my dad last year to the same disease. Not only does it effect the person that has the disease, it is especially hard for those around them. My mom was a great care-giver for my dad, she was endlessly patient and loving, yet it was hard on her. I know the proceeds for this set will truly help all those who are effected by it.
Jody Marcelis

Your stamp set is just awesome...and so are you, my friend! :-)
My grandmother also had Alzheimer's. I was holding her hand when she passed. She had been in the nursing home for over 10 years, perfectly healthy but not knowing anything that went on around her. That is the saddest disease, and I pledged my support to Alzheimer's Association many years ago. Thank you, Carolyn.
I saw your preview info over at Gina's blog.
I am also a subscriber to your blog, so I guess this can be my 2nd comment.
Thank you for sharing your talent in such an important way.
God Bless you, Cammie.
Love this set, and love that your proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Association - always! What a great cause.
Altzheimer is such a terrible disease, it's wonderful you can make a difference thanks to this adorable set! I'm sure your grandmother is very proud of you, even more now.♥
My husband's grandfather, whom I was very close to, had dimentia which is an advanced form of alzheimer's and it was the most heartbreaking thing to see. To see a man who used to be so strong to be so weak and from total independence to dependence. We lost him two years ago and to think about him and what he went through still brings tears to my eyes. My heart goes out to you and your family but what a wonderful tribute to your grandmother.
Lovely card, these stamps are very special to me as my mother is in her final stage of this disease, it is a very long and sad disease, thankyou for supporting this cause.b
You are so amazing! What a wonderful and caring thing you are doing with this set. I am definitely going to get it when it goes on sale. Thanks for being such an inspiration to us all!

What a beautiful way to honor your Grandmother. I, too, lost my Mother this past February to Alzheimers - I miss her everyday, but wouldn't wish her back to the life she had at the end.
Through all of this I have discovered that Blessings can be hard.
I will be ordering your beautiful set and I will think of my wonderful mother everytime I use as fall was her favorite season.

Wow! Cammie, you are so wonderful! I'm so sorry for you loss. This is a wonderful way to honor your grandmother. It is a beautiful set. Katie
Love the card and the set! I'd LOVE to win it! Tomorrow is my 30th birthday so this would be an excellent present! LOL! You are such a wonderful person and I think that your contribution is so wonderful! Katie
What a dreadful disease, my grandfather is going through it now and doesn't remember any of us kids and even doesn't recognize his own kids now. I am sorry for all who go through this and I applaud your honoring your grandmother! Hopefully there will be a treatment soon :)
How gracious a family to care for a family member afflicted with Alzheimers. It takes a lot of love and patience to care for Alzheimers patients. I know, I cared for both my mom and dad who were both afflicted with it at the same time. There were many hard times and I thought I was dying too...but I did my best and I have no regrets. I admire you for honoring your grandmother. MarilynY
Cammie, I am so sorry about the loss of your grandmother. I lost my favorite aunt to alzheimers also. You are so sweet to be giving all the proceeds to the Alzheimers Association. Thank you for the opportunity to win, but just in case I don't, I will be buying one.
The images are wonderful! Aren't grandmoms the BEST? My grandmother also experienced this disease, and I know she is still by my side in spirit everyday...I miss her still and pray that God will grant peace and comfort to you even as you go through these next days!
Thanks for making such a great donation to a great cause!
Blessings!
Kim
That is so sweet. What a way to honor your grandmother. I'm sure she is proud. Angelina
Cammie - your new set is darling and the tribute to your grandma is wonderful. My grandmother had Alzheimer's the last 9-10 years of her life and it is devastating to family members. Unfortunately, my dear mother who turned 80 on Sept.1is beginning to show some signs of memory loss as well. We are praying she won't go down the same path as her mother. Blessings to you for your generosity in contributing to such a worthy cause.
What an awesome contribution Cam!! I love how you're honoring your grandmother, and giving back!! What a fabulous set, and a fantastic card!! Love that darling scene that you've created!! You are such an amazing and strong person. Your grandmother would be proud!! HUGS!!!
What a wonderful set and kuddos to you for such a terrific act by donating the proceeds. The very best of luck on the sales!
Carolyn,

Mary
what a great cause! it's a terrible disease and I am sad that you had to witness it first hand. I love that you are using your creativity in a positive way. you are a special woman!
Wow!!!! what a beautiful card.... I can relate to what Alzheimers does to a person.... I do not have any close relatives with the disease... but I work with it every day... I'm an RN/owner of an Assisted Living Home in Wisconsin and about 1/2 that is 15 out of my 30 residents have some form of dementia/Alzheimer's.... and it is truely difficult.... I can't imagine having a close relative with it.... but I guess we have to deal with what the good Lord gives us .... The set is wonderful and it is very generous of you to donate all of that back to Alzheimer's association... Hopefully someday there will be a cure maybe when our children are that old.... Again that is truely awsome of you to do this.... God Bless. Melissa
Your card is *perfect*, and I am so touched by your story! Hugs!!
OMGosh, I had no idea. We lost my FIL in March who suffered with Alzheimers for 7 years. It was hard knowing what my MIL and SIL had to do go through towards the end of his life. Thanks for sharing your talents for those who can really use it.
Cammie,
The tears are flowing down my cheeks right now from reading about your grandma, and thinking of a dear lady that I know who has Alzheimers. She was like a mother to my hubby when he was little and I love her like one too. It is such a heart breaking disease and I hate seeing her go through it. Sorry for sobbing....your set is beautiful and what a lovely thing for you to do!! {{HUGS}}
What a beautiful Card. I'm so sorry about your Grandma. I'm so glad that Gina is doing this for you what a great way to honor your dear precious grandmother. God Bless.

I am sitting here in tears. My last living aunt has Alzheimers and is now living in a home in Doylestown, Pa outside of Philly. It warms my heart to know that these sets will go to such a worthy cause. Thank you Carolyn for honoring those who meant so much to us and now have no memories left to share.

I love your new set, Cammie, and you're sure to sell a lot of them. What a loving and giving thing that you're doing with it. I can't think of a better way for you to honor your grandmother (and help others with Alzheimer's). I've had a couple relatives with it as well, and I know just what you and your family have been through with this devastating disease). I hope your sales are such that you can't keep up with the orders! ;)
Oh -- I almost forgot! Your tag card is so pretty! You did a beautiful job with the coloring, and the little ribbon on the barrel is so sweet. tfs
What a beautiful card! Your grandma would indeed be honored by this dedication to her.

That is so cute, Im anxious to see the whole set! What a nice way to remember your grandma!
Carolyn,
I am so sorry for your loss. As you stated, you started to loss your grandmother long ago. Who she was the day she passed, wasn't the grandmother you once knew. Keep those wonderful old memories of her alive in your heart and with this collection and the proceeds going to help research Alzheimers that is wonderful of you to do that. Great that Gina assisted you in taking this step.
I am a caregivier/companion to the elderly. 99% of my clients have some type of dementia, whether it be Alzheimers, Parkinsons; etc. I have lost several of them over time. From working with AD clients for the past 5 years, I have learned alot firsthand about the disease.
It is a disease that you wouldn't want anyone to go through.
Knowing that the only true way, according to research, to know if someone 'truely' had Alzheimers is at their death to do an autopsy on their brain. It saddens me to know that reseach is so far behind in this area. This disease is such a mystery still. I pray one day the research will be so advanced that the cause will be known and a cure found for it. The money from your stamp sets will only help this research even more.
God bless you and your family during such a difficult time.
JOY
Fabulous card, and what a wonderful to honor your Grandmother. I love what I have seen of this set and can't wait to see the whole set tomorrow. Thanks for the chance.
Here is my second comment, as I have subscribed to your outstanding blog. I look forward to the updates, so I can see all of your posts. Thanks again for the chance.
Carolyn, you are amazing. Truly. I have a similar story to yours. My grandpa too moved in with us when he had Alzheimers. He lived with us for over a year and the disease progressed so quickly that we finally had to move him into a full time care facility. It was so hard watching him deal with it and I think the worst part of it was the fact that he knew something was wrong with him. The wonderful thing about the whole situation is that right before he died he was himself one last time. I am in tears just remembering those few moments. He died on my birthday and I will never forget it.
This is such a blessing and I want you to know I am buying your set as soon as it is released. You don't need to enter me into your drawing because I will be buying it anyway. Thank you so much for what you are doing!
((hugs))
P.S. I also want you to know I received your package yesterday and I LOVED it! Thanks for that too!
This a very good cause and I'm glad you're able to honor your grandmother's memory with this set!
Hugs!
Tejal
Love the set, your card is beautiful as usual...
How generous of you to donate to such a wonderful cause. My Mom passed away from Alzheimers, it's a terrible disease.

My grandparents are BOTH suffering from this dreaded disease! I help my mother care for them. This is one set that I will purchase for sure. Thank you for giving back! God Bless.
Love the cards. I also lost both my grandparents to Alzheimer's disease. they started showing symtoms in their 80's. Grampa almost made it to his 99th birthday. He just recently passed. I will be sure to buy this set if I don't win it and several other sets to give away as blog candy in memory of my grandparents.
Carolyn - you are such a beautiful person. I love reading about you and your family. How wonderful to donate all the proceeds to Altzheimers. Its a great cause. Your Grandma was surely a wonderful lady.
