HEART TO HEART Blog Candy

WOW! I just cannot believe how big this got. As most of you know by now, I recently released my newest set through Gina K Designs called Whimsical Autumn, which benefits the Alzheimer's Association. My grandmother passed away in June from complications of this horrible disease and I wanted to try to help in any little way I could. I recently found out that today is World Alzheimer’s Day. The Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association DOUBLED all donations given up until today so I asked Gina for some preliminary figures. After just two weeks, lots of sets have been sold. On Friday, I sent over my first commission--$450. So the first contribution ended up being $900! I am thrilled.

100% of my proceeds from this set will always go to the Alzheimer’s Association, but it was so much fun to send that first donation over. Here is the email I received after my donation:

Dear Carolyn,

Thank you for your friendship to the Alzheimer's Association. Your donation of $450.00 to our World Alzheimer's Day campaign is greatly appreciated and will be used to help fund vitally needed programs and services as well as critical Alzheimer research.
Your help is appreciated now more than ever. There are an estimated 5 million Americans currently affected, with another person developing Alzheimer's every 71 seconds ... By mid-century, someone will develop the disease every 33 seconds unless we do something.
Alzheimer's disease is an escalating epidemic due to our aging population. In fact, 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer's disease in their lifetime.
Because of your gift today, we are one step closer to ensuring that more of us - our parents, ourselves, and our children - can grow older without fearing this devastating disease.

Sincerely,
Alzheimer's Association

So thank YOU! Because today is World Alzheimer’s Day, I wanted to do something special for another group of people who are affected by this disease---the caregivers. What began as a little idea----totally GREW! My hope was to get a few contributions from some stamping companies so that I would have a very cool prize to give away to one lucky winner who participated. AS you might have heard----the little prize turned into a GINORMOUS one! So many fabulous companies came forward and offered to contribute. I am so thankful to them.

In addition, I contacted a few WONDERFUL stamping friends to ask them if they would send a card (signed on the back) to add to the blog candy. Although I only asked a few people (and not my buddies out of the country because of the timing)—I had so many sweet emails and tons of handmade TREASURES donated by some of the best stampers/cardmakers out there!

So........ONE LUCKY PERSON WILL WIN OVER $1,000 in prizes PLUS ALL THE AMAZING HANDMADE GIFTS AND CARDS!!!!!!

I have been asked by a few people if I was planning on spreading out the prizes since it ended up being so huge….and I decided that I am going to stick with the original plan---that ONE person wins it all. Every person who plays along will receive a gift—the gift of making some person feel so special. But, I wanted this to be a big prize so that a lot of people play along. And, part of the fun of this blog candy is that whoever wins will be showered with gifts. I have a lot of them at my home and so the winner will receive a HUGE box from me. But some companies are sending out their own and many are gift certificates (as noted in the descriptions below) so the winner will be receiving goodies in the mail for a LONG TIME. How fun will that be?

***Before I get to the how you can win, I wanted to share that the Flourishes Design team all purchased the Whimsical Autumn set and are posting creations that they have made with this set today. Flourishes is one of the companies that donated to the cause and wanted to help generate more cards for this drive and so they took it one step further---please check out this link to see all of their fabulous cards. ((((Flourishes)))))

HOW YOU CAN ENTER TO WIN:
Because of the size of this blog candy, I am going to be strict about the rules! Please follow the all the directions to be entered. You may only enter one time per person but you can make as many cards as you want!

1. In celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day, we are reaching out to some amazing people who deserve to be thanked. ….the caregivers. Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient is HARD work and an often thankless job. There are so many people who help and so—I am asking you to make a card for a caretaker of a person affected with Alzheimer’s. Yes, you can send it to someone you know. If you do not know anyone to send a card to you can send it to the address below (this is the home my grandmother lived in for the last few years of her life. The nurses, aids and support staff there were tremendous. It is such a difficult job and I would love to see them showered with cards!)

To the Staff at the Artman Home
250 N. Bethlehem Pike
Ambler, PA 19002

2. Reread the donations above. I really want you to look at all the companies and individuals who gave to this important cause....cause they ROCK!

3. If you have a blog, please mention this blog candy on it. The hope is to generate as many cards as we can for those who could use a lift. If you do not have a blog, that is fine...just mention it when you upload your card. If you cannot upload your card (because you do not know how) that is fine. Just tell someone about this!)

Please, only one entry per person. In your comment please link your card and also list three companies and two individuals who have donated to the blog candy. Finally, be sure to link this post to your blog and spread the word! Don’t forget to include your email address so I can contact you if you win!

Your entry should look something like this:
Here is my card http://mycardrocks.com/ (FYI---not a real card!)
Three companies who donated are My Favorite Things, Gina K Designs and Flourishes. Two people who donated are Amy Rohl and Sharon Johnson. I have posted this on my blog. Cammie22@hotmail.com

Other important details:

All entries that follow the rules will be printed out on Friday, September 26 at @ 8 PM (central time) (MY GRANDMOTHER's BIRTHDAY). The entries will be printed out, cut up and RANDOM.CARA will pick the winner out of a box. (I will take pictures!) The winner will be posted on Saturday morning. (EDIT: Winner will be posted Saturday afternoon as I have an out of town funeral to attend in the morning. Sorry for the delay...)

I will not be posting on my blog for the next few days so that this stays on top. Everyone is eligible to play (even those who donated prizes.) The only person who cannot win is me.

Please note: By entering to win this blog candy you are agreeing to release your email address and contact information to some of the companies above in order for your prizes to be mailed. If you do not wish for your information to be released, please do not enter. One prize contains peanuts--please advise me before I send it if there is a peanut allergy in your home.

If you do not know how to take a picture of your card or upload it to a gallery or blog, don’t worry. Just make your card and let me know that it is made. I trust you!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them on this post and I will be sure to check back often to answer them. ****Please note---most questions you may have can be answered by re-reading this post!

Good Luck! Thanks again to all of the AMAZING people and companies who made this possible.

This is absolutely amazing. I am in shock and awe at the size of this! We had a caregiver named Ana who took care of my Grandpa Louie until his dying day from Alzheimer's. She is still a part of our family, as are her children. They are irreplaceable people in the world and they truly deserve appreciation. I can't wait to send out a card (or more!) to the caregivers. Thank you so much Cammie for doing this!

WOW! Thank you for organizing such a great campaign. One quick question. If I don't have a blog can I just upload my card to scs, follow the other insturctions and still be entered?

Thanks again for all of your hard work.

This is really an incredible outpouring of LOVE...my roomie and I have been caring for her Mom for 2 yr, yes, with this horrible disease. It accelerated to the point that this past week, she had to go to a home. I don't have the camera, etc to enter, plus because of putting her in the home and the expense, we are moving to a smaller home just for us. So, I can't enter. I am doing this, however, I am sending 2 cards, Monday 09-21-08 one to the home listed above
and the other to the Home Mom is living in today. What a great idea. I'll be in touch after my move this week and see what wonderful things came from this. Aren't stampers some of the most generous people? I will be without internet capabilities for about a week until I can afford to have it added to my new roommates cable. But I will find a way to keep up with ya
in the meantime. Linda Crowder

I do not have a blog to post this on or to post my card on. I truely appreciate the caregivers that care for patients as I am a nurse and have worked in home health. In addition I have had family members that require total care. It is a tiring draining but rewarding job/privledge/duty (many different descriptive words for this). There is a lot of ambivalent feelings in taking care of family members with these terrible diseases that rob them of their quality of life. Often times quality of life has to be redefined.

Three companies who donated are some fo my favorites:
My Favorite Things,
Gina K Designs
Papertrey

Two people who donated are
Kim Hughes
Beate Johns

I am giving my card to my uncle who has cared for my aunt over many years. She recently died.

I'm in tears reading this. Saying thanks to the caregivers is so important because they are usually just taken for granted. I'll be making my thank you card for my mom and dad.

And I want to say thank you to my PIF friends on SCS for directing me to your blog. And of course, thank you Cammie and all the donators for such big hearts!

I don't have a blog or anywhere to post my card. It will be set to my mother-in-law's caregivers at Fairoaks Estates. They take such wonderful care of her. The outpouring of love and patience to my mother-in-law at Fairoaks Estates is unbelievable. Dealing with loved ones with Alzheimers is difficult for everyone who is involved. I would like to recommend a wonderful book to people who are having difficulty in understanding the disease. It's called THE 36 HOUR DAY. We bought copies and sent it to all our family members.

Three donated companies I love are Flourishes, Papertry, and My Favorite Things. Card artists are Beate Johns, Nicole Taylor and Sharon Johnson.

I will be out of the country from Sept. 25-Oct 14 but really wanted to participate. I just recently made a donation to the Alzheimer's Association. Thanks for the opportunity to win these awesome prizes.

Cammie,
I do not have a blog and am not sure how to upload to you. My card will go out to my GrandFather who neglected his own health to look after my grandmother who had Alzheimers Disease. I work with senios everyday and know how hard this is to do. He was adamant that she would be able to stay home. She died a year ago this past April. He is now dealin with his own illness; Cancer; that he neglected to look after because of his caregiving. He will not survive this cancer as it was too late by the time anyone knew/or he acknowledged his symptoms.
I know that I wouldn't have been able to do what he has done. Thank you for this great gift you are giving to your blog followers and to the Alzheimers Society. You are truely a giver!!! Sharri C

Cammie, you are one special person...I am sure your Grandma was blessed to have you in her life. My husband's grandmother fought against this horrible disease and eventually succumbed to it about 12 years ago, she was a very special lady who married his grandfather after he lost his wife during childbirth and raised his 13 children. We have a huge family, and she was always known as "mom" to everyone, we miss her terribly.
I don't have a blog to post my card on, so I am going to send one to the workers at the home in which she lived her last years. They are amazing people, and deserve to know how they are appreciated.

I lost my mother to Alzheimer's 2 years ago. While I remain involved in several volunteer efforts, Alzheimer's is my main one in which I serve as Public Policy Chair/Leadership Committee in Monterey County. California held a rally in Sacramento this year with over 1500 people in attendance (way up from 100 last year). What a day that was - filled with caregivers, family members, as well as several wonderful people in early stages who were able to share their stories. THANKS CAROLYN for your dedication to the efforts of research for this awful disease. You are a wonderful person, as is everyone else who has jumped in here to help. Cindy

First off Carolyn I want to say I am sorry for your loss.. I lost my father earlier this year - not from the same disease, but it is a tough loss.

I have went thru my "stockpile" and came up with quite a few cards to send, so since I have no one at this moment to send them to I will send them to the address you have posted. I loaded it on my SCS - never do this often enough, but wanted to let you see a few I am sending: http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/1062390?cat=500&ppuser=971

As for the wonderful companies and ladies that have donated: Three of my faves would be "Scor-pal; Hambo Stamps and Unity Stamp Company. And the ladies - well of course Beate Johns (she has a fan club out here!) and Chat Wszelaki and they all do such wonderful works of art!

Thanks for such a wonderful opportunity to make these people aware they are needed and loved..

It has taken me hours to get through your post and all those who have contributed including the wonderful comments. So many lives have been touched by Alzheimers. Within the past 6 weeks, I found out mine has too. I have been caring for my elderly parents and have been so wrapped up in my dad's incontinence and other major issues from strokes and broken hip that it never occurred to my mom and I that a great dea of my Dad's problems are the result of undiagnozed Alzheimers. It all makes sense now. I probably should have guessed it when I found him wearing only socks in my kitchen last fall...oh dear...
My family and I have to chuckle our way through this otherwise we'd be crying (or gouging) our eyes out. It has been a struggle to say the least. He is 90 and I have just had to admit him into an Alzheimers unit because he could no longer walk, and it was physically impossible to care for him at home. This continues to break my heart as he begs me to let him come home. He promises to be good and I cry with him trying to convince him that isn't why he is here...
It is just so degrading and heartbreaking to see this sweet man of God, a loving, happy former Baptist minister and counselor, now a lonely man locked away.
My card is for my mother who shared the "adult diaper" duties with me and gave up so much so that he could be home for as long as he was and continues to visit him daily no matter how she is feeling. It is a degrading ugly disease and I greatly appreciate the fact you are putting your talents and time to contribute to ending this slow killer.

Oh Cammie – you are absolutely amazing!! My mouth is hanging open – I am just in awe of what you’ve done to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s.

We’ve had two members of our family suffer with this horrid thing – and know first hand how hard it is on family and friends

I don’t have a blog – will that disqualify me? I also have no idea how to post a picture at SCS. I will be making a card for a caretaker of a person affected with Alzheimer’s this afternoon and will be sending it to the Staff at the Artman Home at the address you gave in your blog – but there is a family in our church that is having to care for a father with Alzheimer’s and I may send it there since the Artman Home will probably get many from people who read your blog. Will I need to write you again with my decision???

What a wonderful thing you are doing! Thanks to all the companies who donated. As a pharmacist I see many family members who become caregivers. They become responsible for taking care of all the patients needs and sometimes forget about taking care of themselves. This is a great opportunity for us to say "Thank you" to all of the caregivers.

This is wonderful in so many ways, I lost a grandmother many years ago when the treatments were limited for Alzheimers. I was the first to suspect something and the rest of the family thought I was making her forgetfullness more than it was. It was so very sad to see such a vibrant woman who was a big part of my childhood lose so much of herself.

So, instead of a single card, I am going to send a gift package of cards to the caretakers at Cammie's grandmother's home. I'm going to send a thank you card and include at least 15 additional cards which the staff can use themselves.

I unfortunately don't have a blog and am terrible at trying to work the camera and the computer.

Instead of posting your blog on my nonexistant one, I am going to send your link to several people who work in the medical industry and who also make cards, I hope they will take part in sending cards too.

Two companies donating that I love are My Favorite Things and Gina K. A third, Splitcoaststampers; I love has such a great donation in way of a membership in the fan club. There are so many companies taking part who I have yet to purchase from and the numbers are overwhelming.

Two generous people are Jody Morrow and Joanne Basile.

Thank you for all you have done, for each company taking part and for each person stepping up to take part too!

This is AMAZING! I am almost cryied after seeing all the ones who have donated so generously to this cause. My great grandmother had Alzheimer's and in her last days it was sad to see how much memory was lost, but was much harder to see was how my grandmother gave up everything to care for her those last few years. I am happy to send some cards for the caregivers. . .it would be an honor. Thanks for reminding us about these dear ones who take care of our loved ones.

Cammie, there are not words to describe how truly amazing you are. I have made a card for my Uncle Melvin who lost his loving wife of 66 years just last month to Alzheimers. Aunt Verna endured five long years living with Alzheimers and Unlce Melvin was by her side every moment, loving her, keeping as much dignity for her as possible. We all miss her but know she is in a much better place. Thank you for doing this. Three companies who caught my eye were: Flourishes, Stampers Dream and Verve Visual. Two card contributors were Laurie Schmidlin (love her work), and Nicole Taylor. I do not have a camera that will take a picture good enough to upload, but as I mentioned, my card will be mailed tomorrow. Again, thank you, and good luck to all who entered this fantastic blog candy.

What a wonderful way to start my day in opening this mail! It does bring tears to my eyes both because of the generosity of the stamping community and the awareness of this disease. What a way to affirm the faith in people!
I will be sending cards to the address indicated today!
The companies donating are all outstanding but three are especially dear to me: Splitcoast Stampers, Verve and Flourishes, and two of my favoite people in the "stamping world" are Sharon Johnson and Cambria Turnbow! If I am fortunate enough to win this incredible outpouring of generousity I will be sharing it with my stamping friends who are fast becoming some of my dearest friends. Thank you for all that you do!

Cammie, what an awesome difference you are making! I was my Dad's caregiver when he was terminal with cancer. It's not an easy task...and I'm sure it would be even more testing with someone who can't remember from moment to moment!

Anyways, here is the card I posted...http://janescreativeprocess.blogspot.com/2008/09/in-honor-of-world-alzheimers-day.html I made a masculine card. I assume there were some male caregivers at the care home you mentioned?

Three of the individuals who have made donations are Amy Rohl, Jeanne Streiff, and Jen del Muro. Two of the companies are Verve Visual (adorable cupcake stamps!) and Starving Artistamps (there's something about the strangeness of these images that draw me to them!)

Does the staff at the care home know they are about to be inundated with cards???

My mother has been taking care of my father for 5 years. He is a 55 year old man. She works full time for the USPS and takes care of him at nights. My sister and I help in the day. My mom doesn't have the heart to put him in a home and we support her 200%. So we do what we can. Is there anything more mean or worse then this disease???
Thanks for getting the word out.

This is the most awesome blog candy I have ever seen for one of the most worthy causes in the world! We lost my grandmother who lived with us to this awful disease many years ago.Caring for an Alzheimer's patient takes an incredible toll on the entire family. My dear aunt was diagnosed recently with early onset Alzheimer's at just 58 years old. It's a devastating diagnosis. I'm sending my card to my dear uncle who is caring for her with much love .I am hopelessly computer illiterate so I don't know how to link it. Thank you for your trust! I loved looking at all of the companies gifts but if I have to pick just 3 to mention, i guess it would be GinaK, Splitcoaststampers and JustRite Stampers. The 2 individual gifts that caught my eye were Beate Johns and Laura Meader. Such adorable handcrafted items! I do not have a blog so I can't link this. Thank you for bringing this devastating illness to the forefront and for the chance to win such fabulous blog candy!!! My email address is janet@swofford.com

Cammie, you are awesome! We lost my grandfather 2 weeks before his 90th birthday this past spring. My daughter I and I made cards for the nursing staff at the Alzheimers Unit and delivered them on Sunday. They were amazed. Not to mention that we were the only ones who had thought about them. We have marked Sept 21st on next year's calendar and are planning to make this an annual gift to them.

This came at just the right time. My Mom and Dad went and visited an old friend of theirs, Ken, who is taking care of his wife who has this horrible disease. I made a card and put it in the mail for my Mom to send to Ken. I think my Mom would love sending a homemade card to him to lift his spirits.

The blog "candy" is amazing. As much as I like all of the stamps and supplies...I love the cards donated even more. Just imagine all of the instant joy you could send with that package of cards!!

I do not know how to upload my card, but I used PTI's Out on a Limb set in blues and browns.
